We are pleased to announce the launch of How Taiga Became Faiya Taiga by Gail Lash, illustrated by Ian Gibson. The event will take place at the National Heritage Library in Belmopan on 18th March at 10:00 am and will feature an author talk, a reading from the book, and fun activities for children.
Inspired by the 2024 fire events in Belize, How Taiga Became Faiya Taiga is a coming-of-age story about a young black jaguar who becomes separated from her family during a fire. Along the way, Taiga discovers that fire can be both destructive and beneficial, and learns that only humans have the ability to control it. In a surprising turn of destiny, Fire appoints Taiga as a teacher whose mission is to help humans understand how to use fire safely and responsibly.
Parents and teachers will find that Taiga’s journey opens the door to important conversations about fire safety and environmental awareness. Today, Faiya Taiga has even become a teaching mascot for several Belizean organizations and government agencies involved in community fire training.
All are welcome to attend this engaging and educational event for young readers and their families.
